Echoes of the Past

A mysterious Kindred, stranger to the city, named Mark Belial had begun to gather influence amongst the younger Kindred in San Antonio. Along with a group of Kindred aligned to him, Belial had started to make enough movements to gain the attention of the Prince, Fernando de la Cruz; though it was quite obvious Belial wasn't trying to be too secretive about it.

The coterie of Knight, Barnett, Mason and Takeda were called to a meeting with Kimberly Ravana at the Jubilee Club to discuss Belial. Her instructions from De la Cruz were for the coterie to investigate Belial and assess what kind of threat he poses to the city. They were to investigate what he was offering the neonates that made him so popular, what his agenda is, and any other information they could find.

As young up-and-comers on the Kindred scene, De la Cruz knew that Belial would approach them to join him, and so it was to prove. The coterie each received invitations to meet Belial at a hotel, whereupon they are asked about the city, the Prince and their opinions on how it is all going. However, Belial cuts short the meeting urgently and departs following a phone call.

The coterie tail him and discover that Alexandria's sister Amber is in league with Belial. They witness Belial execute a Kindred using some unknown power, and overhear two names – "Galbraith" and "Stevens". Following this, the coterie track some of Belial's followers to a house, and discover some ancient scriptures hidden in a safe, which they take to De la Cruz.

From these scriptures, De la Cruz ascertains that Belial is seeking old powers connected with a long-dead vampire faction known as the Sabbat. Their powers were thought lost with them. However, much of the text is in some form of code, which requires a cipher text.

Using the cellphone found on Belial's victim, the coterie contact someone in Boston who insists on meeting them, which De la Cruz approves. The coterie head to Boston. There, they track the individual to an abandoned works office in the sewer, and discover a mad vampire muttering about stopping "him" and obsessively colouring in small dots on sheets of paper.

The vampire is revealed to be the "Stevens" who Belial mentioned – and he confirms Belial's plan to resurrect the powers of the Sabbat, and ultimately recreate the faction with him at its head. To do this he requires the five Sabbat Power Circles, and already has at least one. Another is located in San Antonio. Before Stevens can fully explain, an armed mortal group burst in and gun him down with rounds of fire. The coterie dispose of them, but it is too late for Stevens, whose last words are "Glass Slipper."

The Glass Slipper turned out to be a nearby strip joint, and here the coterie meet Danielle, a Kindred who knew Stevens. She hands them a package which Stevens instructed her to hold for anyone bearing the news of his Final Death. Within the package are two keys and an address, which lead the coterie to a house, and within it a safe. The safe contains only two pieces of paper – one a list of five locations across the world, and the other says simply "find Karina Galen".

The coterie then receive a distressing message from Kimberly Ravana, who urges them back to San Antonio, as Belial is making his move.

Arriving back in San Antonio, the coterie meet with Kim, and she describes what has been happening; that Belial has publicly sought to unseat De la Cruz as the Prince, and nominate a suitable replacement. Obtaining the cipher text has now become critical, as Kim hopes it will give De la Cruz something to counter Belial with.

The coterie track down Karina Galen in Tokyo, where she is looking for a way to return her Childe, Kelle Fraser, from her Final Death at the hands of VII. The coterie help her track down the resurrection ritual, which states she must use the ashes of a powerful Elder. Karina vows to use the ashes of Belial, whom she has encountered previously. Galen thinks she knows where to obtain the cipher text, and heads off to retrieve it whilst the coterie travel to Rome to track down something called the Obtenebration Scriptures – which were also key in the resurrection ritual for Kelle.

They find that the Scriptures are kept by Carlos Lasombra and his Childe, Lucita. However they are betrayed by the Sheriff of Rome, Roberto Ferrari, who is an ally of Belial. The coterie are able to deal with Ferrari and persuade Lasombra to let them take the Scriptures, on the promise that they are returned, and that the Prince of San Antonio will owe him a great favour.

Back in San Antonio, Karina returns secretively and meets with the coterie, De la Cruz and Kim Ravana. She suggests that the coterie must discover what Belial knows. The link is Amber Barnett, and Alex is sent to meet, and reason, with her.

Amber & Alex's emotional reunion ends with Amber admitting she doesn't trust Belial, and confirms that he plans to install his own Childe, Michael Volos, as Prince. She details all of his actions up to now, including everything she has learned about his network of Kindred across the world. Alex returns to Karina with this news, unaware that Galen has instructed Takeda and Knight to dispose of Amber once her use came to an end.

At a meeting in Elysium, Belial reveals his candidate for Princedom, but the Kindred are surprised when Karina returns and announces her own similar intentions. The Kindred vote, and the coterie also, and in the final count Karina Galen emerges as the victor. Belial is angered and leaves, declaring that the city would "regret this."

However, one detail Alex gleaned from her sister was Belial's haven location. Karina gave the coterie the order to terminate Belial once and for all – but as a powerful Elder Kindred, a direct confrontation would be suicidal. The coterie rigged his haven with powerful explosives and left Knight to detonate it remotely. Before they could leave, Belial confronted them and, faced with an impossible decision, Knight detonated the explosives anyway. The coterie all survived, albeit with serious injury, but no trace was found of Belial - which consequently meant Karina was prevented from enacting Kelle's resurrection ritual.

Over three years have passed since that night, and nothing else has been heard of Mark Belial or his associates. The coterie, meanwhile, have other concerns looming…
